Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market filling the streets with seasonal festivities
With Christmas soon to arrive, Birmingham’s city centre streets are now ringing out with festive tunes …and spirits!
As twinkling lights and freshly made foods are filling Victoria Square, in the city centre, it was official - the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas (the largest authentic free market of its kind outside of Germany) is officially open. Feeling much different to previous years, this year, people were ready and waiting to get their hands on their first German beers, creamy hot chocolates and slices of garlic bread.
Dozens of stalls are selling traditional food and drink including schnitzel and bratwurst, as well as handcrafted gifts, decorations and jewellery. And, as the stalls are split between three locations this year, the ice rink, ice lounge and big wheel are being launched in Centenary Square.
Councillor Deborah Harries, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: "We welcome the Frankfurt Christmas Market back to Birmingham, which is a highlight of the season for residents and visitors alike, starting the countdown to Christmas for many.
"It is a festive fixture which brings in millions of visitors and is testament to the city’s reputation as a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive destination—and a major boost to our visitor economy, attracting up to 5 million people each year." Kurt Stroscher, Director of Festivals and Events, Frankfurt City Council, added: "I am proud and delighted that we have succeeded in establishing our ancient Christmas market tradition so successfully in Birmingham that this year is our 26th consecutive Frankfurt Christmas Market.
"The acceptance and enthusiasm of Birmingham's citizens and visitors is both confirmation and encouragement for us to continue with great commitment to present a wonderful Christmas market in Birmingham." Meanwhile, for Christmas in Cathedral Square, that is also open, as it brims with locally-made gifts, as it, too, has plenty of food and drink options, a pop-up pub and a helter skelter in operation.
For many visitors, opening day is as much a Christmas tradition, as putting the tree up on December 1. - with many people ready to enjoy the festivities right from the off. The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market is open daily now until December 24.
