Black History Month in Birmingham brings ‘Stolen From God’ to Kitchen Garden Café
‘Stolen From God’ brings original folk song together with West African kora and live narration to explore England’s involvement in the transatlantic trade in enslaved people and the histories that remain embedded in Britain today.
‘Stolen From God’ is a live song cycle by acclaimed songwriter Reg Meuross, built from more than four years of research into England’s involvement in the transatlantic trade in enslaved people. It’s at Kitchen Garden Cafe, Kings Heath, in Birmingham, tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7, with concertina player Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, kora player and griot Modou Ndiaye Cissokho, and narrator Tim Walker.
The show combines original songs and live narration with English folk instrumentation and West African kora. The Birmingham performance is this Wednesday at Kitchen Garden Cafe.
· The Guardian called the work “ambitious, often unsettling”, while Americana UK described the album as “one of the best folk albums I’ve heard in a long time”.
