The Minister for Sport, Nigel Huddleston, visited Victoria Park in Royal Leamington Spa on Thursday evening (7 July) to carry out the official draw for seven of the 11 medal events that make up the Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls competition at Birmingham 2022.

The seedings for the competition are done based on the results from Gold Coast 2018 with any new teams that did not compete four years ago being added to the different sections (pools) through the draw process.

Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake will captain the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022 which starts on Friday 15 July. A 4x100m relay 2017 world champion, he has been honoured with the role for the Championships.

He booked his place at the Muller UK Athletics Championships last month when he ran a time of 20.05 to win the men’s 200m. Mitchell-Blake will compete in the 200m and be part of the 4x100m relay squad in Eugene.

The memory of a remarkable Wolverhampton teenager will be honoured this summer as her mum carries the Queen’s Baton Relay through the city in her place.

Skye Gardner, of Wednesfield, had been nominated to carry the Baton ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

An inspirational University of Wolverhampton academic has been chosen as one of the Batonbearers for the forthcoming Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. 

Dr Martin Khechara, an Associate Professor for Engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in the University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, will be carrying the baton on part of its journey through the town of Uttoxeter when it reaches the West Midlands on the final leg of its journey to the host City.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay has reached a significant milestone, having completed a 269-day international journey across 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. It comes as the Baton has just completed visits to the Home Nations: Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

Host nation Team England will start the men's competition with the Bello brothers facing Tuvalu in the opening match. Reigning Commonwealth champions, Australia, will also get their campaign underway on 30 July when they take on the Maldives in the second session of the day.

Warwickshire batter Dom Sibley will leave Edgbaston when his contract finishes at the end of the 2022 season to re-join Surrey. The 26-year-old, who joined Warwickshire in 2017, played a leading role during the 2021 season as the Club secured its eighth County Championship and won the Bob Willis Trophy at Lord’s. 

Batonbearers who will run the last leg of the Queen's Baton Relay in Kent have finally been announced ahead of its arrival next week.

When it is paraded through Gravesend next Friday, the first athlete with Romany heritage to compete at the Paralympic Games, an Olympic heavyweight boxer and the chairman of the North Kent Caribbean Network will be some of those carrying the baton.

Warwickshire County Cricket Club has announced the signing of exciting all-rounder Ed Barnard who will join the Club from Worcestershire on a three-year contract. The 26-year-old - who has made 235 professional appearances, scoring 4,756 runs and taking 367 wickets will join the Bears at the end of the 2022 domestic season.
