  • Villa beat Liverpool to win FA Youth Cup

Aston Villa beat Liverpool 2-1 at Villa Park to win the FA Youth Cup for the fourth time after making a strong start to the game and taking an early lead when Ben Chrisene turned home a cutback.

Brad Young converted a penalty soon after to make it 2-0, before Villa twice hit the post. A Melkamu Frauendorf volley deflected in off Seb Revan in the closing stages but Villa held firm to win the FA Youth Cup for the first time since 2002.

Six of the players in Villa's side also started against Liverpool's first team in the 4-1 FA Cup defeat in January after a Covid-19 outbreak had ruled out the club's senior players. The home side won their fourth FA Youth Cup and the first since 2002. That experience showed during the early stages as a team which had scored 26 goals in five ties ran rings around opposition who had conceded only three times – and never more than twice – on their way to the final.

On social media, one of the winning heroes, Aaron Ramsey, wrote: "It's everything we dreamed of," whilst on the club’s @AVFCOfficial twitter account it simply said: ‘The ??????’ with a picture of the winning team celebrating their victory.

Joint manager Sean Verity said: "The club has a totally different feel about it which is down to the owners. We had Christian Purslow shouting the lads on and when you've got that from the top... This club is going places."

Arthur, who has also spent time with Celtic, Hibernian and Bristol City during her career, is Gemma Davies’ first summer signing ahead of the new Barclays FA Women’s Super League season.

Davies said: “Chloë is a current Scottish International, who also has an abundance of Super league experience having played at Birmingham and Bristol City.

“She’s a very technical player, with a fantastic ability to weave the ball out of tight spaces, under pressure and play into bigger areas.

“I feel that there is so much more to come from Chloë, as she has a huge amount of talent and I’m really excited to see how she continues to develop in a Villa shirt.”

The Super League season is aiming for a start date of 5-6 September.

The 35-year-old defender becomes Gemma Davies’ second signing of the summer as she reshapes her squad for their first season in the FA Women’s Super League.

Asante has racked up 70 caps for the Lionesses and continues an illustrious career which has included spells in the USA and Sweden.

Head Coach Davies said: “Anita will be joining us from Chelsea Women with an already tremendous amount of experience in the FA Women’s Super League, having also represented England at major tournaments.

“Anita’s on-ball ability lends itself superbly to that of a modern-day centre-half – happy to play in tight spaces, play under pressure and creative passes between lines.

“This is what a centre-half at Aston Villa looks like. But it’s her character and desire to be the best that sets her apart.

“We are all really looking forward to welcoming Anita at Bodymoor Heath for the start of pre-season.”

The Super League season is aiming for a start date of 5-6 September.

  • Villa sign Portuguese international Silva

Aston Villa Women have confirmed the signing of Diana Silva from Sporting CP. The 25-year-old becomes Gemma Davies' third summer signing following the arrivals of Chloe Arthur and Anita Asante earlier in the window. The length of the contract hasn't been disclosed, nor has a fee been mentioned.

Silva has long been regarded as one of the brightest talents in her native Portugal. Silva began her career at Atlético Ouriense as a child. Initially part of their boy's team she was promoted straight to the women's first team as a 13-year-old as the club didn't have any women's youth teams. She impressed with her hometown club, scoring 89 league goals across her spell there.

She spent six years at Ouriense before moving to Clube de Albergaria for the 2015-16 season. An impressive season, scoring 19 goals in 24 games, attracted the attention of Sporting CP.

Following the reformation of their women's team after two decades without one, they were keen to make Silva their marquee signing.

She spent four years in the Portuguese capital, firing the Lionesses to consecutive league titles in her first two seasons. These took her total medal count to four after collecting two league titles with Ouriense in 2012-13 and 2013-14 as well as having an equally glittering career in the Portuguese Women's Cup. She has won a remarkable three doubles, twice with Sporting and once with Ouriense in 2013-14.

With experience in the UEFA Women's Champions League as well as with the Portuguese national team - already winning 58 caps after making her international bow aged just 16 - she also formed part of the Portugal squad at Euro 2017.

On the Aston Villa's website, Silva said her main motivation for moving to England was the new challenge: "I wanted to take a new step in my career and do something different.

"I've never been out of Portugal, so it's a big step for me. I achieved a couple of championships with Sporting and I hope to conquer more here."

The signings of Silva, Arthur and Asante are major statements of intent by Villa who are looking to make waves in their debut season in the Women's Super League.

Angel City founder and president, Julie Uhrman, said: "As a former player, the club's determination to make an impact both on the field and in the community is something that I fully support, and I can't wait to get started.

One of the club's co-founders is actor Natalie Portman, and other founding investors include tennis icons Serena Williams and Billie Jean King, and retired US soccer greats Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach.

Eni won 102 England caps and helped the Lionesses to third place at the 2015 Women's World Cup, as well as playing five times for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

  • Villa supremo, Aluko, accepts Lioness Parris’ apology

Former England Women’s Football star, Enio Aluko has said that she has “acknowledged and accepted” former international teammate, Nikita Parris’ apology for a controversial goal celebration in 2017.

The international striker described celebrating with the then-England coach, Mark Sampson, who was accused of using discriminating language to Aluko, as “thoughtless”.

In response, on her social media platform, Eni wrote: ‘Although I’m yet to speak with Nikita, I acknowledge and accept this apology.

    ‘Thanks.

‘Black women should always strive for unity not division.’

Aluka, now Sporting Director of Aston Villa Women’s football team, added: “During the current climate, Nikita leads the way for the England Women’s football team in acknowledging and addressing past individual and collective actions with regards to racism”.

After scoring a goal against Russia, Parris, 26, pointedly ran to Sampson to celebrate in their 6-0 World Cup qualifying victory in 2017.

The former Manchester City player who now plays in France for Lyon wrote on social media: ‘At the time I focussed more on what I believed was showing unity when really it did nothing of the sort. It showed a lack of empathy, understanding and ignorance by singling out a voice that needed an ear to listen and a support system to help’.

In the aftermath, Eni said that Parris’ celebrations were not respectful considering the number of complaints against the former manager at the time.

The English Football Association apologised to the 102-capped Alluko for racially discriminatory remarks made by Sampson after a third investigation into his behaviour, but cleared him of bullying accusations.
