With a huge summer of sport ahead, including the world’s largest football tournament, kicking off in June, and the Commonwealth Games in July, households across the UK are transforming their gardens into open-air fan zones.

From outdoor TVs and projectors to garden lighting and speaker systems, the race is on to create the ultimate match-day setup. NICEIC, the UK’s leading certification and training body for the electrical industry, is warning that without the right preparation, these upgrades could quickly turn from entertainment hub to knockout disappointment.

New search data shows the trend is already in full swing. Online searches for “outdoor TVs” peaked at more than 12,000 in May last year and have surged by 128% over the past three months, according to Google Trends data.

Searches for “outdoor electrics” have also doubled in the same period – signalling another spike in demand as this summer approaches (Google Trends, 2026). Imagine your screen going black just as a penalty is about to be taken, or drinks warming up as the fridge cuts out.

These are the kinds of avoidable disruptions that can turn watching a long-awaited football match into a frustrating experience yet are often easily prevented by ensuring your setup is safe and correctly installed. While the focus may be on picture quality and sound systems, NICEIC is urging homeowners to prioritise safety and consider what could happen if things go wrong.

To help avoid match-day mishaps, NICEIC has put together a simple checklist:

  • Proper installation: ensure outdoor electrics are safely installed and protected to prevent power trips and faults.
  • Keep the drinks cold and the screen on: avoid overloading socket-outlets, ‘daisy-chaining’ extension leads or using unsuitable extension leads, which can cause outages and overheating.
  • Avoid a total setup shutdown: make sure all equipment and connections are protected from rain and moisture.
  • Make sure your setup goes the distance: only use outdoor-rated socket-outlets, leads and fittings with the correct IP rating.
  • Call in a professional: a registered electrician can ensure your setup is safe, compliant and built to handle the demand.
  • Never attempt DIY electrics; the risks are serious and simply not worth it; always use a registered professional.

Paul Collins, Technical Director at NICEIC, commented: “With so many people planning to watch football and other sports outdoors this summer, it’s tempting to focus on creating the perfect setup, but many people aren’t aware of the potential safety implications.

“There’s nothing worse than your electrics cutting out at a crucial moment. Using a qualified, registered electrician helps ensure your installation is safe and correctly installed so you can enjoy the match without worrying about unexpected interruptions.”

There are currently over 40,000 NICEIC-registered electricians across the UK, all regularly assessed to ensure they deliver work in line with up-to-date electrical regulations.
