For a second year now, Ramadan Streets returned to Birmingham, where people of all backgrounds were invited to a five-day cultural night market celebrating the spirit, community and shared experience of Ramadan.
Starting last night (to Sunday 8th March), the event is running daily from dusk until 11.30pm in an open-air setting on the Coventry Road, in the city, provided by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) with additional support from Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Combined Authority, Arts Council England, Soul City Arts, as well as The Halal Food Festival, following the success of its inaugural year the event will also be supported by Birmingham City Football Club Foundation and will be hosted on grounds around the club’s St. Andrews stadium.
After its immense popularity last year, once again Ramadan Streets will be a vibrant event for communities to get together to break their fast, share food, and experience what is a popular marketplace. Mohammed Ali, Founder and Artistic Director of Soul City Arts “During Ramadan, said: “People come together for prayer and to eat at the end of the fasting day in mosques, homes and restaurants.
“With Ramadan Streets, we’ve brought a safe outdoor space that is open to all and rooted in community. In the times we live in, we need more spaces for us to celebrate ourselves and each other and this space offers that coming together.”
Councillor Saima Suleman, Cabinet Member for Digital, Culture, Heritage and Tourism at Birmingham City Council added: “Last year’s Ramadan Streets proved to be a fantastic celebration of faith, culture and community.
“And I’m delighted that the event has returned once again. It is wonderful to be working with Birmingham City Football Club, with this year’s market taking place on the football club’s grounds and creating an exciting opportunity for even more residents to come together in a safe and welcoming space.”
Continuing between 5.30pm and 11.30pm, thousands of visitors will flock to the Blues ground, where they will find smash burger vendors, matcha sellers and more, alongside artisan vendors and a covered reflective art zone.
