A jeweller in Solihull has issued a warning to local brides and brides-to-be who are heading off on summer holidays and considering taking their diamond rings with them.
Whether jetting off on a honeymoon or heading abroad for a summer break, an engagement ring is one piece of jewellery certain to accompany those travelling. But according to a Solihull jeweller, one beach bag essential could be dimming its signature sparkle.
Leya Chapman, Store Supervisor at Beaverbrooks, on Touchwood Solihull, said: “Many people don’t realise that products containing SPF can leave a film on your diamond and metal band, which can make jewellery appear dull or cloudy.
“The sticky residue from SPF can also gather in the setting, trapping dust, sand and lint, especially when you’re at the beach. While platinum and high-quality gold are resilient, repeated exposure to sunscreen can accelerate tarnishing or discolouration of the metal – so while SPF is essential for your skin, it’s certainly not for your jewellery.”
To avoid that holiday haze, Leya suggests letting SPF fully absorb and washing your hands before slipping your ring on. “If you can, it’s worth removing your ring before applying sunscreen or heading to the beach or pool.
“Keeping it in a soft pouch or travel case when not wearing it is a simple way to protect it from unnecessary damage. Remember to always wash your hands before handling it after applying cream – it might take a few minutes, but it can make a big difference to your ring’s long-term shine.
“If your diamond does pick up residue or build-up, a gentle clean at home should restore its sparkle. A small drop of mild washing-up liquid, warm water and a soft toothbrush is ideal for freshening up your jewellery.
“Just be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. While diamonds are made to last a lifetime, a little care goes a long way when it comes to keeping your engagement ring looking its brilliant best.
“For those travelling with high-value pieces, it’s also a good idea to double check insurance coverage before flying – especially for honeymoons or destination weddings. Every diamond tells a story, and your engagement ring is not just sentimental – it’s a valuable piece of jewellery, too.
“Whether you’re tying the knot abroad or jetting off on a romantic break, make sure your ring is fully covered before you travel.” Anyone in Solihull looking for advice on how to care for their engagement ring can visit Beaverbrooks’ Solihull store on Touchwood Solihull to speak to one of their experts.
