• World snooker stars to return to Wolverhampton after tournament success

    The biggest stars in snooker are set to return to Wolverhampton next year after the success of last week’s Cazoo Players Championship at Aldersley Leisure Village.

    City of Wolverhampton Council worked closely with the World Snooker Tour (WST) to stage the event in the city for the first time, with more than 4,000 people attending across the seven days.

  • World's oldest footballer extends stay in Portuguese league

    The world's oldest professional footballer at 56, has extended his stay with Portuguese second-tier side Oliveirense. Ex-Japan striker, Kazuyoshi Miura, joined Oliveirense on loan in January from Yokohama and will continue with them on that basis for an undisclosed duration.

    He’s played just 28 minutes of football this year, spread over three substitute appearances. Miura was named man of the match on the final day of the Portuguese season after a 26-minute cameo in a 4-3 win over Leixoes. The opposition manager said that the decision was offensive and turned it into a "circus".

    Reigning Olympic champion, Swede Daniel Ståhl and Slovakian 2022 world gold medallist Kristjan Čeh will headline a stellar line-up of Olympic and world medallists in the men’s discus at the London Athletics Meet on Sunday 23 July. With more than 40,000 tickets already sold for the meet, it will be the biggest athletics fixture since the World Athletics Championships London 2017.

    Čeh – who threw the joint fourth furthest throw in history at a meeting in Estonia on Friday at 71.86m - has two Diamond League wins to his name so far in 2023 after victories in Doha and Rabat.

    The Championships, set to be held in the United States, was originally due to be held in 2021, but has had to change due to the current worldwide-affecting coronavirus crisis.

    With the Tokyo Olympics – which was due to take place this year – now pushed forward to next year, the Worlds’ – due to be held in Eugene, in Oregon - will, subsequently, be pushed forward a year.

    But, as such, it did bring out some concerns as to whether it might clash with the Commonwealth Games, which is set-out as THE major international athletics attraction on the sport’s calendar for that year.

    Following a period of lengthy, heavy negotiations, compromises with athletics’ governing body were reached to move the event to 15-24 July 2022 so that it doesn’t clash with the Commonwealth Games of that year, which will be taking place in Birmingham from July 27 – August 7.

    Lord Coe, president of the IAAF said: “Our guiding principle in rescheduling was to ensure enough space was created enough space around the centrepiece World Athletics Championships for athletes to choose other major events to compete in.

    “We were also very mindful that we didn’t damage the other major championships in 2022.

    The European Championships is also due in 2022

    That is set to take place in Munich, in Germany and is set to start in August 11.

    Organised under the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives by Dubai Sports Council, the Dubai International Sports Conference has been bringing football’s top stakeholders together every year since 2006 for exploring ways to develop and enrich the sport at domestic, regional and international levels.
