Tiny Cape Verde pulled off what was a stunning result in its World Cup debut, shutting out heavily favoured Spain, in Atlanta.

An impressive performance by 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha helped Cape Verde play one of the favourites in the tournament to a 0-0 draw. The final score is the biggest shock of the tournament so far.

In one of the biggest shock results of the FIFA 2026 World Cup, Spain have been held to a goalless draw by debutants Cabo Verde in the first match of both the teams at the 2026 edition. Spain, the reigning European champions, wasted a plethora of chances and ultimately could not break the resilient Cabo Verde defence even once.

Cabo Verde, meanwhile, made one of the most memorable debuts in World Cup history. A nation of just around 550000 people has forced the footballing giant to split points.

A huge result for the World Cup and a humongous result for the game!
